Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
